Nyando Flood Control

River Nyando is one of the rivers in Nyando river basin prone to flooding every year causing enormous loss of lives and property in the lower Kano plains. The Authority is currently undertaking rehabilitation works on dykes earlier developed to contain floods in the Nyando area.

Location and scope of the project Areas
Nyando flood control project is located at the Lower Kano Plain in Western Kenya Kisumu County and covers three (3) sub Counties namely Nyando Sub County}. Nyakach Sub County and Muhoroni Sub County). Currently the works are in Nyando Sub County around Ahero Township.

Effects of flooding and Flood Mitigation measures in Nyando Basin
The river has within it some of the most severe problems of environmental degradation and depending poverty found anywhere in Kenya. In the Kano Plains about 60percent of the households are temporarily denied access to cultivable lands when is flooded. The poor drainage of the flood plains make large portions of the farmlands inaccessible while some portions of the arable land are under prolonged inundation that reduces the number of bee tares under cropping.

Challenges, when floods occur, subsistence households living along the riverbanks are displaced by the high water levels, and then have to seek refuge on the raised grounds or in neighboring trading centers. Most of these households have to live in temporary shelters with flooding recedes and they can return to their former homesteads and farmlands.
