Chemususu Dam – Baringo County
The Chemususu dam project is located on the Chemususu river which is a tributary of Tigiri river some 17kms to the west of Eldama Ravine town in Koibatek District. The dam is 45m high dam with a storage capacity of 12Mm3 of water capable of yielding 35,000m3/day of water to supply Eldama Ravine Township and its environs.
Water treatment works and water supply pipeline
The Central Rift Water Works Development agency has taken over the implementation of the project was formerly being implemented by Rift Valley Water Services Board.
This phase of the project has more than 30 water reservoirs in Eldama Ravine, Mogotio in Baringo County and Rongai Sub-County in Nakuru at various stages of construction. Once complete, the project is expected to serve a population of 6,00,000 people.
Areas of distribution will include Esageri, Solian, Muserechi, Kabimoi, Saos and Rafiki among others.
Project benefits
The project benefits include:
- Improved the living standards of the people of Chemususu, Eldama Ravine Town and its environs including parts of Koibatek, Baringo, Londiani and Nakuru Districts due to improved water access to approximately 600,000 people;
- Enhancement of Human resource capacity building for National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation;
- More reliable supply of water through adequate storage at the dam;
- Reduced outbreak of water borne diseases;
- Increased potential for industrial and commercial development.
- Attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by increasing water supply coverage from 28% to 100% after project completion and operationalization.
- Achievement of Vision 2030 goal on medium/ large dams to achieve per capita storage of 16m3 instead of the current 5m3.
