Bosto Dam

The Government of Kenya through NWCPC has prioritized development of the Bosto Dam Water Supply Project in Bomet County. This is one of the main Vision 2013 flagship projects that aim to provide potable water to all in line with constitutional provisions and the right to water and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The proposed dam will be 45m high zoned rockfill dam with an impermeable clay core. The capacity of the reservoir will be 29.5Million cubic meters. Treatment works will have capacity of 80,000m3/day with appropriate water system network and storage facilities to serve an initial population of 550,000 with a coverage area of 1050KM 2.

The project is proposed to be executed by Finance Design and Build (FDB) development consortium (contracting firm / joint venture) at an estimate cost of 20 billion. FDB firm shall source for funds, design and construct the proposed project.

NWCPC Board Chairman Hon. Dr. Julius Kones said: “The proposed Project will be vital in provision of efficient and sustainable water supply system, creation of employment and enhancement of the socio-economic well-being of the region.” The Project will be realized through construction of a dam across Kipsonoi River in Bomet County.

NWCPC has since held meetings with stakeholders on the project to seek their views and address their concerns. Elected leaders from both Kericho and Bomet counties met with NWCPC management and Board chairman early this month. They welcomed the project and urged for speedy implementation.

The Ag. Managing Director, Dr. (Eng.) Ali Hassan said National Environment Management Authority (Nema) has approved the construction of the proposed project hence construction is expected to start soonest possible. “Other than Nema, we are working with other stakeholders like the KFS, the local community and leadership to ensure smooth and successful implementation of the project”.
