The dam is located in Baringo County, Koibatek District and has a capacity of 15 million cubic meters or 15 billion litres. Chemususu Dam discharges 35,000 cubic metres or 35 million litres of water per day. It was designed to serve at least 50% of Baringo County population which includes towns and various institutions within the County.
The project which was started by the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation (NWCPC) has started creating some impact on the locals. The government is already using the water for some projects including Parkerra irrigation scheme in Marigat District with some locals also benefiting from the spill-over water from the dam.
Improved the living standards of the people of Chemususu, Eldama Ravine town and its environs including parts of Koibatek, Baringo, Londiani and Nakuru Districts due to improved water access to approximately 600,000 people.
Enhancement of Human Resource capacity building for National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation.
More reliable supply of water through adequate storage at the dam.
Reduced outbreak of water borne diseases.
Employment to 300 people for the 3 year duration of the project. Thereafter 75 personnel will be deployed /employed to manage the project.
Increased potential for industrial and commercial development.
Attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by increasing water supply coverage from 28% to 100% after project completion and operationalization.
Achievement of Vision 2030 goal on medium/ large dams to achieve per capita storage of 16m3 instead of the current 5m3.
